Our Focus Areas

Corporate Social Responsibility

UPL responded to the reality that on a number of occasions, ‘islands of prosperity’ did not translate into benefits for those who co-existed in proximity.

At UPL, ethics is not just a means of liquidating a corporate burden in a regulatory-compliant manner; it is a broader responsibility to make the world a better place.

The unintended result has been numerous awards for the caring side of our corporate personality including the recognition for being one of the 50 most caring companies in the world.

We Are United (WAU) An Employee Volunteering Programme

At UPL, we believe that the best businesses are also the most socially-sensitized. To extend social consciousness across the company, UPL started an employee volunteering programme called We Are United (WAU). This programme was started with the objective that various social initiatives undertaken by UPL employees were conducted as per a structured operational framework. Under the programme, UPL employees and their families invest their time, skill and energy to assist the underprivileged.

This WAU initiative increases an understanding of rural India among employees, provides all-round development opportunities and a self-esteem-enhancing opportunity.

In 2013-14, UPL employees invested more than 1,000 person-hours in volunteering initiatives around the Ankleshwar and Vapi factory locations. The initiatives comprised interventions in the areas of education, health, flood relief, safety and nature conservation.

WAU - Bal Gramotsav

At UPL, we believe that sport is character-building. To encourage sport and recreation, our WAU volunteers worked with seven schools in six villages of the Mandava cluster (Ankleshwar taluka). Our WAU volunteers and teachers selected the best athletes from among students with the objective to inspire.

The best 52 athletes (standards one to eight) were provided sport track suits with UPL and WAU branding. The programme increased student enthusiasm and co-operation with teachers and peers, strengthening attitudes, increasing the willingness to learn skills, enhancing the ability to work independently and improving physical fitness.

WAU - General Health Camp at Vapi

At UPL, we believe that a healthy community is a happy community. To provide health care in villages proximate to Vapi, namely Valvada and Cherri, the company conducted general health camps covering general health, eye and dental care, in association with the Haria L.G. Rotary Hospital, Vapi.

Our WAU volunteers worked closely with the medical team to make the event successful. During the event, free medical advice, medicines and health services were provided; several patients were referred to welfare hospitals.

WAU - Infrastructural Support to Government High School

The Government High School at Nana Chowk, Jammu was in a bad shape and selected by our WAU team as their project. Repairing and painting work was completed for the entire school building and the team also improved the lighting and the ventilation to make the interiors more student-friendly.

Going a step further, the team provided furniture and other infrastructure items. The team also distributed umbrellas, woolen clothes and sweaters to enhance all-weather attendance.

The intervention translated into a positive academic and attendance impact.

UPL CSR Internship

At UPL, we believe that it is imperative to engage students in the larger objective of nation building. The UPL CSR Internship programme provides students the opportunity to work on ‘live’ CSR projects. This opportunity makes it possible to improve students’ understanding of rural community needs and how CSR can make a difference.

UPL CSR Internship

CSR Internship, 2013-14

In 2013-14, nine students from the ASPEE Agri-business Management Institute (AABMI), under the Navsari Agriculture University and Garware Institute of Career, Education & Development under the University of Mumbai, participated in the UPL CSR Internship programme. These students were assigned field projects at Dang and Nashik; their participation led to thought-provoking ideas.

At Dang, the interns studied changes in crop patterns and livelihood implications; they promoted farm demonstrations of high-yield paddy and conducted a baseline survey of agriculture-based skill development and agripreneurship programmes.

At Nashik, the interns conducted a baseline survey of livelihood opportunities around the Unimart concept.

Following the completion of on-ground activities, the interns made detailed presentations to the UPL management team at Vapi, which was submitted to the CSR Head of UPL Limited. The reports were appraised across agreed key deliverables. The students submitted their reports and feedback, completing their internship.
